Karjat is one of those places that people drive through on the way to somewhere else, without realising that it is the destination. Tucked into the Sahyadri hills about two hours from both Mumbai and Pune, it has waterfalls, ancient caves, easy forts, a proper river, film studios and some of the greenest monsoon scenery in Maharashtra. We live here, on a farm in Dahigaon, so this is our honest guide to what is actually worth your time.

Chase the Waterfalls

In the monsoon, Karjat becomes waterfall country. Water comes off the hills everywhere, and a few spots are genuinely spectacular. Bhivpuri has a cluster of falls that are popular with day-trippers. Zenith Waterfall, near Khopoli and about forty minutes away, is one of the tallest in the region. There are also smaller, quieter falls along the back roads that most tourists never find.

One thing we always tell guests: respect the water. Waterfalls look calm and turn dangerous fast, especially after heavy rain. Stay away from the edges, do not swim in fast-moving pools, and keep an eye on children. For a full rundown, read our guide to the best waterfalls in Karjat and where to stay.

Trek to a Fort or the Caves

Karjat is surrounded by the Sahyadris, so there is no shortage of treks, and most are beginner-friendly.

  • Kondana Caves — a group of ancient rock-cut Buddhist caves, over two thousand years old, reached by a short and pretty green trek. Beautiful in the rains and rich in history.
  • Peb Fort (Vikatgad) — a moderate trek near Matheran with sweeping valley views. Best attempted with an early start.
  • Prabalgad and the surrounding ridges — for more experienced trekkers looking for a bigger day out.

Whatever you choose, wear proper shoes, carry water, start early, and check trail conditions in the monsoon when rocks get slippery.

Get on the Water at Bhivpuri

Bhivpuri, a short drive from Karjat, is the local hub for kayaking and river camping on the calm backwaters. It is a lovely, low-key way to spend a morning on the water, and a good option for groups and families who want a little adventure without a hard trek. Go with a licensed operator and wear the life jacket.

See Where the Films Are Made

Karjat is quietly one of Bollywood's favourite backlots. ND Studios is a large film city in the area that has hosted major sets and productions. Public access depends on shooting schedules, so it is worth checking ahead, but the fact that so many films are shot here tells you something about how photogenic the region is.

Slow Down on a Farm

Here is the part most guides miss. The single best thing to do in Karjat is nothing in particular. This is farm country, and the region rewards people who slow down. A morning walking through orchards, an afternoon by a pool with the hills in front of you, a home-cooked lunch eaten slowly, an evening around a bonfire with no agenda. That is what most people actually remember about their Karjat trip, long after the waterfall photos are forgotten.

This is exactly what a farm stay is built for. If you have never done one, read what to expect on your first farm stay, and our take on what agro tourism actually feels like on a working farm.

A Simple Karjat Itinerary

If you only have a weekend, keep it easy:

  • Day one: Arrive by late morning, settle in, have a proper farm lunch, and spend the afternoon at the pool or on a farm walk. Bonfire in the evening.
  • Day two: Head out early for a waterfall or the Kondana Caves, come back for lunch, and take it slow before you drive home in the evening.

Do not try to see everything. Karjat is not a checklist, it is a change of pace.
